Cost of a Shooting in St. Joseph County Indiana and
South Bend Indiana

There was an analysis about what a Milwaukee shooting costs.  We wonder what the cost is here since in 2017 there were 102 shootings and 16 gun deaths in South Bend. Our the costs we have similar?

The costs between the City of South Bend and St. Joseph County overlap when there is a shooting because the Coroner, 9-1-1 PSAP Call Center, Metro Homicide, County Jail, Juvenile Center and Prosecutor are part of the County.
For the taxpayer, aside from the lack of security, high crime areas mean increased car and home insurance, more security hardware and monitoring, and reduced property values. Investors are not as interested in areas with high crime and security issues. Hospitals are often filled with people going through detox since there are no longer detox centers here. Rarely do those shooting or being shot have medical coverage which also strains the budgets. There are also long term ongoing costs to consider.
This is important to the Citizen because aside from the huge monetary cost, there is the emotional toll on both the perpetrator and the victim's families. Lives are torn apart, children are left without parents and a community tries to pickup the pieces.

If you think this type of analysis needs to be done, please contact both your County Council and City Council representatives today.
